Regulative Verses of the Qur'an is available to purchase now

October 6, 2026

We are delighted to announce the publication of Regulative Verses of the Qur’an: From Historical Trends to Contemporary Trajectories, edited by Karen Bauer, Seyed Mohammad Ghari S. Fatemi, Robert Gleave, and Devin J. Stewart. This edited volume appears as part of the Al-Mahdi Institute series with Brill, and brings together leading scholars to examine one of the most foundational questions in Islamic thought: why the Qur’an contains legal verses, and how they have been interpreted across the centuries.

Through detailed analysis of classical and contemporary texts, the volume explores the nature of law in the Qur’an itself and in Islamic thought, including the foundational yet often overlooked genre of aḥkām al-Qur’an. It reveals how jurists across Sunni, Shia, and Ibadi traditions have debated the meaning, scope, and application of legal verses, illuminating the rich interplay between divine revelation, legal reasoning, and ethical inquiry in Islam.

Three chapters from the volume are available to read open access below, including contributions from AMI’s own Professor Seyed Mohammad Ghari S. Fatemi and Shaykh Arif Abdul Hussain. The complete volume is available to purchase directly from Brill in hardback and e-book editions.
